Why we Twitter

Four researchers from the ebiquity research group at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County have released an excellent investigation of a two month period of Twitter messages and the authors of these messages.

The authors presents their conclusions regarding different types of intentions of Twitter users : daily chatter, conversations, sharing information and reporting news. They also describe main categories of users on Twitter : information source, friends and information seekers. For more information, have a look at their paper : Why We Twitter: Understanding Microblogging Usage and Communities.
